August 2004


We just celebrated our 7th anniversary! Where has the time gone.

We had a great time in Texas – four cities in five days. At least 40 of our students have visited the girl & the fig – it was great to see some friendly faces. We did, however, get lectured by our pronunciation of PECANS – oops. San Antonio’s River Walk was cool! We had real BBQ in Luling and I got to see my college roommate, Kim in Ft. Worth.

The restaurants have been really busy. Season has taken us by storm and we are relishing in all of the hard work. John & I are getting ready for our James Beard House Dinner next month. The logistics are the hardest, shipping Sonoma County to New York?

Our line of FIG FOOD is starting to take off as well. In California, our products can be found at Dean & DeLuca, Oakville Grocery, St Helena Olive Oil Company, Ravenswood Winery, St Francis Winery, Cline Cellars, Napa General Store and soon in Nonna’s Eastside Market. I will post a full listing in the near future of all of our retailers.

This has been a very busy month! We spent a glorious week in NYC, had some fantastic meals at restaurants including; TOWN, The Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station, Artisinal, Balthazar, Nobu Next Door and a few other fabulous spots! We stayed at the hip Hudson Hotel which is a scene in itself. Cool spot – very small rooms! We had a great food show with the Valley Fig Growers and saw some of our customers and set up a few new accounts. We stopped by Simon & Schuster to see our editors and there was a line all the way around the block – it wasn’t for me! Bill Clinton was in town. We stoppecd by the James Beard House to check out the kitchen – we are so excited for our dinner there in September! Best of all I got to see my family! John cooked some amazing ribs for a family BBQ and we had a gret time sipping strawberry margaritas in and out of sun showers!

We are now off for Texas to join Central Markets in some cooking classes.

Both restaurants are getting ready to change over to deep summer menus. The Fig Cafe is open nightly and we are now offering complimentary corkage every night. Mary Schuh’s art is on display at The Fig Cafe – COME SEE!

June 2004


Well, we just recently sold the girl & the fig in Petaluma. We gave it our best efforts but in the end, we got an offer we couldn’t resist. Our last day of service was a wedding on June 5th. This was a bittersweet decision, we will miss our new friends in Petaluma and the grand old building as well! Many of our dining room staff have merged with the Sonoma & Glen Ellen staff. Lane, the general manager and a few of the kitchen staff will stay on with the new owners. As soon as we have more details on the new restaurant we will share them with you.

Meanwhile, at the fig cafe, Alex Cole’s art is on display through the end of June. We are happy to introduce to you our new chef de cuisine, Bryan Jones. He is doing a great job and is cooking a slightly new menu. As of June 14th we will be open nightly at 5:30 for the summer.

John & I are heading for NYC for some promotional activities with Simon & Schuster for the Cookbook and for the New York Fancy Food Show.

Our fig food product is now available at the Oakville Grocery stores.
