Save the Date

We have so many events coming up in the next few weeks, we don’t want you to miss out on all the buzz!  Here are just a few of the things on our calendar this month, but be sure to check out our other upcoming events as well.

Make-A-Wish Foundation: Wine & Wishes

We are extremely excited to be participating again this year in the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s 9th Annual Wine & Wishes fundraiser!  This event will consist of a Gourmet Food and Wine Tasting, including 26 chefs and restaurants and 36 winemakers, followed by an intimate Winemaker Dinner. Wine & Wishes takes place on Saturday February 7th in the unique and spectacular setting of Treasure Island in San Francisco and is surely an event not to be missed!

VinOlivo is one of many events taking place during the Olive Festival and is a grand celebration of the best tastes the Sonoma Valley has to offer.  A feast for the senses, VinOlivo gives you the chance to try the valley’s best wines, meet winemakers, taste Sonoma’s best culinary creations, sample local olives and olive oils, and treat yourself to sparkling wine and chocolate tastings.

We are looking forward to participating in this event again this year, and plan on presenting delicious bites from both the girl & the fig and ESTATE.  Join us on February 13th at The Lodge at Sonoma for this extraordinary wine and culinary event!  Please visit the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance website for more information and tickets.

Night at the Academy Awards

We are very excited that the 12th Annual Night at the Academy Awards, put on by the Sonoma International Film Society, will take place at ESTATE this year!  Guests will walk the red carpet to a “Hollywood attire” champagne reception, silent auction and epicurean tastings.  When it comes to the main event, the 81st Annual Academy Awards, guests can look forward to a live, multi-screen telecast of the ceremony.

The 4th of July at ESTATE

The town of Sonoma comes alive with small town charm each year on the 4th of July with a parade and festival in the historic plaza, culminating of course with a magnificent fireworks display.  We feel very lucky this year to have the best seat in town at ESTATE, just a few blocks from the plaza, and plans are in the works to bring you a July 4th celebration that you won’t soon forget!

Featured Cocktail: Martini Madness

Here are the two cocktails that we entered into Martini Madness this year:

ESTATE’s Entry: The Caprese

4 basil leaves
1 oz sweet tomato water
.5 oz white verjus
1.5 oz of Skyy vodka
1 Caprese olive
1 small pearl of fresh mozzarella

Muddle 4 basil leaves, 1 oz of tomato water and .5 oz white verjus.  (Verjus is unripened grape juice used to add acidity to food and drinks.)  Add the Skyy vodka and fill the mixing glass with ice. Shake the ingredients until cold and strain into a martini glass.  To make the garnish, cut half a queen stuffed olive in half as well as a small pearl of fresh mozzarella.  Wrap both together in a basil leaf and skewer with toothpick.

To make the sweet tomato water: bring 2 cups of water and 2 oz of sun dried tomato to a boil, and add 1/2 cup of sugar. Continue to boil for 10 minutes. Strain and cool the tomato syrup.

the girl & the fig’s Entry: Starry Night

1 oz Junipero gin
1/2 oz of pear liqueur (We used Belle de Brillet)
Juice of half a lemon
1/4 oz of simple syrup
Dash of absinthe (We used Kubler)
Olive dust as garnish

Add the gin, pear liqueur, lemon juice and simple syrup to a mixing glass. Add ice and shake until cold. Add a dash of absinthe to the martini glass and coat the interior. Next strain the cocktail into the coated martini glass and garnish with a pinch of the olive dust.

To make simple syrup: add 1 cup water to 1 cup of sugar. Bring mixture to a boil and allow to boil lightly for 10 minutes. Let the syrup cool before using.

To make the olive dust: pit a cup of your favorite olives, then run them through a blender. Next, drain them of their juices by ringing them out in a few layers of cheese cloth. Lay the olive puree on a cookie sheet and place in the oven under low heat until dry. This should take a few hours. When done the olive puree will still contain the oils, but very little water.

The contest was a lot of fun to participate in, and there were a lot of great contestants this year.  We are very honored to have won the “Most Creative Cocktail” award for the Caprese!

Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône
Sondra and John are very excited to have the chance to participate once again in Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône in France this March 16th to 21st.  This will be the third time they’ve travelled to this event, and will be attending with some other friends from Hospice du Rhone.

This unique six day event, which is exclusive to the wine trade, will include 14 tasting sessions, 750 wine growers and merchants, and wines from 24 Rhone Valley appellations.

In the News: Northbay Biz: The Girl and the Foodies

Be sure to check out the February 2009 issue of Northbay Biz magazine for Richard Paul Hinkle’s article, “The Girl and the Foodies.” This detailed article describes Sondra’s beginnings in the restaurant business and the inspiration and motivation that started it all.  the girl & the fig and its various ventures are chronicled from the very beginning up to the addition of ESTATE in 2008, including the integral part that Director of Operations and Executive Chef John Toulze has played over the years.

It’s certainly been quite a journey, and we’re glad that you’ve been a part of it!

In the News: 20 Stars of ’09 Awards

The Tasting Panel Magazine recently honored “20 Stars of ’09,” their top picks for the annual best of Sonoma and Napa, at an intimate awards banquet that took place last month.  We are very proud of our very deserving Director of Hospitality, Gary Saperstein, who won the award for the Best General Manager in Sonoma!  Congratulations, Gary!

Congratulations are also in order for Ron Kantor, extended fig family member and husband of our Office Manager, Julie, who won the award for the Best Wine Bar in Sonoma along with business partner Robert Della Santina.  Their wine bar, Enoteca Della Santina, is located just off of the Sonoma square and specializes in wines from all over the world.

Congratulations to all of the winners!
