Featured Retailer: Local’s Tasting Room
by Julie Kantor, fig food Sales Manager

Tim Hylas and Carolyn Lewis are co-owners of Locals Tasting Room in Geyserville, California, which has been open now for eight years and has been pairing wines with the girl & the fig’s condiments for most of that time, we are happy to say.

Tim, Carolyn and their manager, Diane, followed various routes from New York City, to Krakow, Poland, to Geyserville!  “Locals came about as a way to showcase the small production artisan wines local to our area. We were the first to introduce this concept and liked the idea of our customers being able to taste flights of wine within the same varietal but from different vineyards and diverse wine making styles.”  They have an on-line wine club as well.

Carolyn describes herself as a “serial entrepreneur”, who is essentially self-taught in the wine business – an education she has thoroughly enjoyed.  Tim has a background in accounting/finance, and Diane “has been dubbed the ‘Palate Whisperer’ by our customers because of her uncanny ability to pinpoint exactly what they will like and dislike in a wine.”

Diane is also the food expert and has provided a wonderful wealth of recipes on their web site.  Her May recipe for a unique red cabbage dish easily incorporates our apricot fig chutney and fig balsamic vinegar.

Travel and Leisure named Locals the best stop in Geyserville, so be sure to plan a visit on your next wine country itinerary.

fig Family News: Goodbye, Gary!

It is truly with sadness and real joy that we say goodbye to our magician of hospitality, Gary Saperstein, after 10 years as a key member of our management team.  With his incredible optimism, hospitality expertise, wine knowledge, and level headed attitude, Gary has had the best interest and intentions for the girl & the fig at heart and has certainly been someone that has contributed to so many levels of our business.  The past decade with Gary has been rewarding, fun and has gone by so fast.

The joy that we share with you regarding Gary’s departure is that he is leaving to create his own venture.  Gary’s new business, Out in the Vineyard, is “an experiential Wine Country Tour and Event company promoting positive LGBT lifestyles and offering exclusive, luxury itineraries and events to the discriminating gay and lesbian traveler and their friends.” When talking to Gary about his decision to create this business, he explains that this business is an opportunity for him to combine everything that is important to him: friends, travel, entertaining, LGBT lifestyle, eating, wine-tasting, living the wine country life style, and sharing it with other people all over the world.

In the ten years that Gary has been in Sonoma with us, he has made many, many friends. I know that we are among them and that we will all lovingly support him in his new chapter of his life.  I know that Gary will not be a stranger to us – the girl & the fig will always be his home, and his presence will be felt long after his job ends.

Gary – Thank you so much for everything that you have done, created, nurtured, supported, engaged, administered, and maintained.  We wish you MUCH success!
