Save the Date

March is another busy month with several events for us to look forward to!  Here are some highlights from our calendar, and be sure to check our website for other upcoming events:

Artisan Cheese Festival

We are super excited to be a part of the 3rd Annual Artisan Cheese Festival in Petaluma taking place later this month.  The festival is a weekend-long celebration of artisan cheeses, food and wine with educational seminars, demonstrations, tastings, and much more.  With so much to learn, see and taste, this is definitely a must for the food lover!

If you’re planning to be in the area, be sure to stop by the festival on Sunday, March 22nd to see Chris Jones, our own Executive Chef, on the chef’s stage demonstrating his technique for house made ricotta and his ricotta gnocchi.

Rhone Rangers Grand Tasting in San Francisco

Another weekend-long celebration takes place later this month, but this time it’s all about Rhone wine!  The Rhone Rangers’ 12th Annual Grand Tasting in San Francisco is a weekend of seminars, tastings and everything Rhone, and attendees can look forward to hobnobbing with winemakers, tasting from some of the best wineries and brushing up on the latest news in the world of Rhone wine.

We are looking forward to catering the weekend’s reception and formal dinner with the winemakers on Saturday, March 21st in the San Francisco Presidio.  There is no doubt that there will also be some fabulous Rhone wines to pair with!

Savor Sonoma

The 19th Annual Savor Sonoma Valley: A Barrel Tasting & Culinary Experience also takes place later this month and is truly a celebration that takes place all over the valley.  Twenty wineries will be showcasing their wines, including new releases, and offering guests the chance to mingle with winemakers while sampling culinary creations from local restaurants and chefs.

We are thrilled to be presenting a special food pairing of pork rillette with apricot fig chutney with the exquisite wines of Landmark Vineyards.  Be sure to visit us at this beautiful winery located in Kenwood.

Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône: We’ll Keep You Posted!

Last month we told you about Sondra and John’s upcoming trip to France to participate in Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône.  This unique six day event, which is exclusive to the wine trade, will include 14 tasting sessions, 750 wine growers and merchants, and wines from 24 Rhone Valley appellations.  Accompanied by some of our friends at Hospice du Rhone, this will be the third time Sondra and John will be attending this exciting event.

Such a big event deserves to be shared, and we plan on keeping you posted with how things are going abroad.  Be sure to follow Sondra and Hospice du Rhone on twitter for day to day updates from the event, and look for a recap of their experience in the April issue of figbits!

Featured Cocktail: Espresso Martini

This month I decided to give you the recipe for the Espresso Martini. There are numerous versions of this cocktail, but I found this one to be a real crowd pleaser. The addition of a shot of espresso makes it a perfect after dinner drink.

1 Shot Espresso
1 oz Vanilla Flavored Vodka
1/2 oz Baileys
1/2 oz Kahlua
Whipped Cream

Add one shot of fresh brewed espresso to a mixing glass.  Add 1 oz Vanilla flavored vodka (I prefer Stoli) then 1/2 oz each of Baileys and Kahlua.  Next add ice to the mixing glass and shake until chilled.  Pour into a chilled martini glass, and add a splash of whipped cream.

For a nice touch, I recommend a freshly whipped cream with vanilla beans and sugar.

This cocktail is very easy to drink, but be careful! I have talked to people that have enjoyed these too much, and they were not able to fall asleep until well into the next morning.

In the News: Did you miss us on NBC’s In Wine Country?

We were very excited to be included in last weekend’s episode of In Wine Country on NBC!  Hosted by Mary Babbitt, this weekly series has been giving viewers a glimpse into life in wine country since 2002 and regularly features local wineries, chefs and artisan foods.  Last weekend’s segment, “the girl & the fig Empire,” focused on a day in the life of Sondra as a restauranteur, and included some behind the scenes footage of Sondra and John in our gardens and kitchens.

In the News: Sonoma is No Longer the Other Wine Country

Check out Daedalus Howell’s article No Longer the ‘Other Wine Country’ on for mentions of the girl & the fig and other hotspots in Sonoma County.  The article is an all-inclusive look at Sonoma County from the inland Sonoma Valley to the historic town of Petaluma, the coastal charm of Bodega Bay, and the hidden treasures of the West County.

A must-read for both locals and out of towners to inspire your inner explorer!
