The Farm Project: What’s Growing and What’s Cooking

We are excited about what we’ve been able to accomplish so far with The Farm Project, our new biodynamic farms at Imagery Estate Winery, the girl & the fig and ESTATE that have been supplying us with much of the organic produce that is used on our menus.

We have seen a lot of growth in August: cucumbers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, berries, melons, peppers, potatoes, and a ton more! The plants are gorgeous, and it’s amazing to watch our tiny seeds grow all the way from sprout to fruit. Our staff, family and friends (even the young ones!) have been having loads of fun spending time in the gardens, tending to the plants and helping to harvest the just ripe fruits and vegetables.

Sonoma Valley SharecropperAugust has also seen the first batch of our Sonoma Valley Sharecropper’s products. These products are made from our garden’s fresh fruits and vegetables and are currently available by the jar at our restaurants. You’ll be able to try our Lemon Verbena Apricots, Dilly Beans, Oil & Vinegar Beans, Pickled Peppers, Brandied Plums, Sweet & Sour Squash, and our famous Bread & Butter Pickles that you have already enjoyed for years at the girl & the fig and the fig café.

Be sure to visit us soon to taste our harvest and take home a jar of your favorite flavor!

Featured Retailer: Gatewood Hall Gracious Home
by Julie Kantor, fig food Sales Manager

If you’ve ever travelled to the Blue Ridge Mountains, you know that the owners of Gatewood Hall Gracious Home have chosen an idyllic spot in which to settle and to offer their neighbors and visitors a unique selection of home décor and gift items without having to leave the rural tranquility of Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Corky Gatewood and Shawn Hall established their business in 2006 and recently expanded to a much larger space. Although they exist in a rural setting, they’ve achieved national attention. Their concept recently won them inclusion in the “50 Retail Stars of 2010”, chosen by the industry publication, Home Accent Today. Some of the criteria for selection are to “excel at innovative marketing and advertising efforts, head-turning in-store displays and out-of-the-box business ideas.”

Gatewood Hall is one of the newer retailers that the girl & the fig is happy to add to our list, especially since we have a very small fig food presence in Georgia. Of course, the addition of our fig food product line clearly exemplifies that innovative thinking that won them Star recognition! You can read about the shop and events happening in the area on Corky’s blog. (Some very gracious photos included.)

Corky recently taste-tested our newest product, Nana Mae’s Apple Fig Mostarda, and received some very creative feedback from his customers. Several said they wanted to add it to a peanut butter sandwich. Now that’s thinking beyond the cheese plate! If you have favorite ways in which you use our various condiments, we’d love to share them with our readers.
