Featured Retailer: Slough Food
by Julie Kantor, Fig Food Sales Manager

This month we’d like to introduce you to a small wine and cheese shop in Edison, Washington, Slough Food, that celebrated its 6th year in business last April.  Owner John DeGloria grew up in the beautiful Skagit Valley, pursued a career in the wine trade, and always wanted to return to the area.  “I’ve always known, and loved, this little hamlet of Edison, isolated in the middle of farmland, with the Samish Bay on one side, and the Blanchard and Chuckanut Mountains on the other.  It is a lovely spot like no other.  An old friend wanted to open a bakery here in town too.  Independently of one another, things just clicked.  Breadfarm Bakery opened in the summer of 2003, and I opened Slough Food the following spring.  When I named the store, I wanted to name it after a local landmark for a sense of place.  The Edison Slough empties into Samish Bay.  Some towns have changed the name of slough to channel, or something another that sounds more ‘appealing’.  We keep things honest here in Edison.”  In his newsletter, John gives credit to the woodworkers who helped create a space for enjoying food and wine outside with a view of the slough.  He noted that some of the reclaimed redwood came from Pier 3 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

the girl & the fig connection: John serves a prosciutto, mozzarella, basil panini.  “We slice up two mozzarella balls, add a little olive oil and a generous splash of your fabulous fig balsamic, lay the slices on the bread, two slices of prosciutto, and cover with fresh basil leaves.  It’s delicious!”

Check out Slough Food to learn more about Washington’s artisan cheesemakers.  Just looking at John’s lovely photos of the area will bring tranquility to a hectic day.
